Why You’re Afraid of Cosmetic Dentistry (And Why You Shouldn’t Be)

We all know the importance of a great smile. Maintaining a bright, healthy smile is one of the most important parts of everyone’s health and beauty regimen, but too many people put off taking care of their teeth. Perhaps the mere thought of sitting in the dentist chair is overwhelming, and cleanings can seem like an arduous task — especially when your teeth seem to be ‘just fine.’

Trust me. If you’re not getting regular cleanings, the health of your teeth and gums is likely not fine.

Then one day, a chipped tooth, a stain, or maybe the thought of living one more day with crooked teeth, finally drives you to visit the dentist. You learn the value of cosmetic dentistry. An experienced, well-trained cosmetic dentist can significantly improve your oral health and appearance, but there are a few things you need to know before you begin treatment.

Every dentist is not a cosmetic dentist.

Every dentist learns a few procedures that fall within the realm of cosmetic dentistry, but not every dentist is a cosmetic dentist. Dentistry’s aesthetic requirements are not intuitive. Specific aesthetic courses and extensive advanced training are required. I have been training and teaching for nearly two decades at The Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, and I continue to learn more about this fascinating field every day. Always ask about training and certifications before you commit to any cosmetic dentist.

It doesn’t take forever.

You may think you don’t have time for lengthy, continuing dental appointments, when it seems as if you barely have time to breathe. Time doesn’t have to be a deterrent. Most cosmetic dental procedures are not nearly as invasive as other surgeries. Professional teeth whitening, bonding and gingivectomies (gum lifts) can be completed in one visit.

It’s more affordable than you think.

Cosmetic dental procedures that will immediately improve your smile can be costly, but they don’t always have to be. The cost depends on the level of treatment needed. Treatment can range from whitening to porcelain veneers, and each carries its own cost. You always have options, and a good cosmetic dentist will present all of them to you.

Some procedures are covered by insurance.

Many cosmetic procedures are not covered by insurance, but some medically necessary procedures that restore tooth structure and improve oral health — including crowns, fillings, orthodontics and some bonding, might be partially, or fully covered.

At Incredible Smiles, we make cosmetic miracles happen — every day, which can benefit a patient’s overall health, appearance and well being. Check out some of these wonderful transformations.
