You’ve heard that you should get dental cleanings every six months to keep a healthy smile. Why six month cleanings? How did dentists (and insurance companies) come up with the idea for recommending cleanings every six months?
It all goes back to a toothpaste called Ipana from the 1950’s. Maybe you can’t remember back that far or were not yet born? Check out this clip from the movie Grease!
The truth is, the majority of people are not well served with cleanings every six months. Most need a cleaning every 3-4 months to truly stay ahead of the destruction caused by bacteria, which could include cavities, gum recession, and gingivitis. Remember this – Healthy Tissue Doesn’t Bleed.
Our recommendation at Incredible Smiles is to get your tissue measurements checked on a regular basis. When your numbers are higher than 3 – take notice! Brush, floss and Waterpik – in that order!
