The mouth to body connection

The mouth to body connection

There is a connection between the mouth and the entire body. Seventy – five percent of the public has gingivitis. Bleeding gums means you have an infection that is systemic (affecting your entire body).

Hello and welcome to incredible smiles. My name is Dr. Lori Kemmet. Many people today want to know what the connection is between their mouth and their whole body. 75% of the general public has gingivitis. Gingivitis is an inflammation of your gum tissue. We tell people every day that healthy tissue doesn’t bleed. If you’re flossing and brushing and you’re noticing bleeding that’s not a good sign.

So what is the all body connection? The connection is when your gum tissue is bleeding it is infected. An infection is an inflammation that has a systemic relationship with your whole body. Even cardiologist today are finding that there’s a strong link between what’s happening here and what’s happening in your heart. Gingivitis has also been linked to Alzheimer’s. Imagine plaque in your gum tissue getting into your blood system and these little tiny plaque particles calcifying somewhere in your body. What if they can also find your brain? What does that mean for you and your ability to think.

I also just recently had a patient who noticed that after getting his mouth really clean for the first time in a long time that he didn’t need as much insulin. There’s a strong link between gum disease and gingivitis and diabetes. Taking care of your mouth is very important.
