Here at Incredible Smiles we pride ourselves in using the best-known materials on the market, including BPA-free fillings. BPA or Bisphenol-A is becoming a very well-known substance to stay away from. Growing scientific evidence has linked the chemical to a host of problems, including cancer, sexual dysfunction and heart disease. Federal officials say they are particularly concerned about BPA’s effect on the development of fetuses, infants and young children.
Recently we have had a few guests raise concerns about possible BPA found in composite fillings. I wanted to share with you a little information to help answer this common question. The short answer is no, the composite filling material that we use at Incredible Smiles does NOT contain BPA.
Rest assured, you can have your cavities fixed with BPA-free fillings. Bis-GMA is a common ingredient in many dental composites and sealants and is contained in the composites and sealants that we use. Bis-GMA is not the same as Bisphenol A as the two have different molecular structures. Our composite does not contain Bisphenol-A as an ingredient. However, depending on the raw materials, Bisphenol-A can be present — in trace amounts — as an impurity. In the final product (composites or sealants) Bisphenol-A is typically below normal detection limits and posses no significant health risk.
